On Saturday, November 1 at 10:00 a.m., Wilderness Community Church will host a Rise Against Hunger meal-packaging event—bringing together volunteers of all ages to fight hunger locally and globally.
Rise Against Hunger is a faith-based ministry that partners with churches and organizations to package and deliver nutritious meals to people who are struggling with hunger. Their mission is to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives, and providing hope
For Reverend Bob Cooper and the people of Wilderness Community Church, this is personal. “Wilderness Community Church has a passion for missions. It is exciting to offer this missional opportunity in our backyard,” says Cooper. The church already runs a monthly food pantry, serving neighbors in Spotsylvania who are experiencing food insecurity. Cooper emphasizes,
“Food insecurity can impact anyone. No one is immune from this issue. I have witnessed the struggles people have endured.”
Having helped launch Rise Against Hunger events at three previous churches, Rev. Cooper is excited to see this global mission touch Wilderness for the first time.
Volunteers will work side by side in a fun, energetic atmosphere filled with teamwork and joy.
“It is energetic and a lot of fun. There is so much joy as people come together to bless others,” shares Cooper.
Tasks include:
No matter your age or ability, there is a role for everyone. Wilderness expects 40–50 volunteers and welcomes families, youth groups, and community members. Even young children can participate!
The goal is ambitious: 10,152 meals packaged in one morning.
Meals
The meals prepared at Wilderness Community Church will travel far beyond Spotsylvania. Rise Against Hunger will determine the destination, and the church will share updates with volunteers once the meals are delivered. But this isn’t just about food.
“We see these meals as a tangible expression of the love of Jesus Christ. It is saying that faith and action go hand in hand. Providing for people’s physical needs opens the door to other ministry opportunities,” says Cooper.
He also reminds us that hunger isn’t only “over there.”
“Hunger impacts the lives of people in our community and region. We can make a difference both globally and right here at home.”
The most meaningful part for Rev. Cooper is seeing churches come together for a common mission.
“It is uniting and demonstrates how the Holy Spirit can work through us,” he reflects “many people cannot participate in a week-long mission trip. However, all of us can give a Saturday morning to serve and bless others,” Cooper encourages.
